Australia seal massive win

Shane Watson felt the full force of the axe as sparkling knocks from David Warner and Glenn Maxwell lifted Australia to a record 275-run World Cup win over Afghanistan at the WACA Ground on Wednesday.

Warner blasted 178 off 133 balls, before Glenn Maxwell inflicted his own carnage with 88 off 39 balls, to lift Australia to 6-417.

In chasing the mammoth target, Afghanistan were bundled out for 142 in 37.3 overs despite the best efforts of Nawroz Mangal (33).

Paceman Mitchell Johnson leaded Aussie side with bowl as he bagged four wickets for 22 runs, while Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc chipped in with two wickets each.

The result was the biggest World Cup victory, bettering the 257-run wins posted by India in 2007 and South Africa last week, and was the second-biggest ODI win in history.

The win lifted Australia up to third in Pool A ahead of Sunday's crunch clash with Sri Lanka at the SCG.

The hosts have scored 417 runs in 50 overs losing six wickets in the World Cup match between Afghanistan and Australia.

Dawlat dismissed Finch at 4 while Shapoor stopped Warner at 178.

Earlier in the game, Afghanistan won the toss and opted to field against the host, wouldn't have thought that the first half of their World Cup group matches would pan out this way.
