Rain might have spoiled Australia’s mood, but it certainly lifted the atmosphere in the Bangladesh team, as the latter came out of their World Cup match against the hosts with a point yesterday. Continuous rainfall in the region saw the day-night affair at the Gabba officially called off on 4.41pm AEST without a ball being bowled.
Having three points from two matches, an unbeaten, confident Bangladesh will meet Sri Lanka next in Melbourne on February 26.
The weather has been on it’s worst side right from when the Tigers landed in Brisbane, where cyclone Marcia had done the damage both in the lives of Queensland people and also the Australian team in the context of the World Cup.
Mashrafe and his troop arrived at the stadium at 1pm on the rainy day, half an hour before the scheduled start time, though their supporters gathered at the venue way earlier.
Nasir Hossain, Rubel Hossain, and Al Amin Hossain looked to be in a joyous mood, as they stepped beside the boundary rope before running back inside from the rain which was in no mood to stop.
It would have been a great experience for the Bangladeshi cricketers to play at this historical ground but at the same time getting a vital point against the strong Australian side is something which the Tigers won’t mind.
On the other hand, the Aussies were disappointed. A wash out was the last thing they wanted, and it was evident from the words of Steven Smith who faced the question of whether they lost a point or Bangladesh gained one.
“I think we both gained one point, didn’t we? Look its always disappointing not to get out there as its a place where we played well at the Gabba but obviously we can’t control the weather but we take that one point. Hopefully we can play good cricket in the rest of the tournament,” said Smith at the post match press conference.
