BCB, Mushfiq, Shakib pay tribute to Hughes

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) yesterday expressed its deepest condolences at the tragic demise of Australian cricketer Phillip Joel Hughes. The 25-year old passed away yesterday at St Vincent’s hospital in Sydney, New South Wales following an injury on his neck which was incurred while playing a first-class match at Sydney Cricket Ground last Tuesday.

The president and directors of the BCB extended their heartfelt sympathies to the family of Hughes during this sorrowful time.

Bangladesh Test captain Mushfiqur Rahim in a message said, “Phillip Hughes was an embodiment of the fighting spirit and the world of cricket will miss him. The news has come as a terrible shock. Our thoughts are with Phillip’s family, friends and the Australian cricket fraternity. May his soul rest in peace.”

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib al Hasan, who played alongside Hughes for Worcestershire in the English county circuit and Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash, also expressed his sadness on his official Twitter page. “I cannot explain enough how traumatic this is for me, especially because I knew him personally as we played in the same team for Adelaide. Not only I lost a teammate, also lost a good friend! My prayers are with him and his family, rest in peace mate!”
