Joshi to coach Bangladesh spinners in Australia Tests

Former India left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi will begin his short Bangladesh coaching job a couple of days before the Tigers take on visiting Australia in the first of two Test matches in Mirpur, starting on Sunday. The BCB’s cricket operations committee chairman Akram Khan informed Dhaka Tribune on Sunday that the former India cricketer has taken up a 20-day long spin consultant job with the Tigers. According to the BCB director, the deal will see Joshi stay with the Tigers for the Australia Tests. “He is scheduled to arrive right ahead of the first Test against Australia and stay till the end of the series,” said Akram. It is understood that the BCB and the Indian coach will think of a long-term agreement following the Australia series.

If a common ground is reached, Joshi, who played 69 ODIs and 15 Tests for India, will start his full-time job with Bangladesh in their tour of South Africa. The BCB has been looking into options for the national spin coach’s post for quite some time now. Though the board has uttered different names at times, it seems the BCB has finally been able to be on the same page with Joshi. The first time Joshi was revealed as an option for the job was when Bangladesh toured India for the lone Test in February this year. The Bangladesh spin bowling coach’s post went vacant after former Sri Lankan cricketer Ruwan Kalpage got sacked in August last year. The former Sri Lanka spinner had failed to report for duty.
