Out-of-sorts Tigers return home today

The Bangladesh cricket team will land home today at 8:30am following their horrible month-long tour of the West Indies. The Tigers’ dismal run in 2014 was prolonged further as Mushfiqur Rahim and his side lost both the ODI and Test series in miserable circumstances with the solitary T20I washed out.

The just-concluded tour pales in comparison with the two previous visits made by Bangladesh in the Caribbean. Under the leadership of Habibul Bashar in 2004, the Tigers claimed their first Test draw. While in 2009, Bangladesh, captained by Shakib al Hasan clinched both the Test and ODI series albeit against a severely depleted West Indian side.

Bangladesh’s next assignment will be the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea where veteran paceman Mashrafe will lead a star-studded squad in pursuit of their title defence in the Twenty20 competition. Regular skipper Mushfiq will miss the event due to his wedding reception on September 27.

Ever since his reduced suspension came to an end recently, Shakib will be returning to competitive action for the first time replacing right- arm spinner Sohag Gazi whose bowling action was reported by match officials during the ODI series against the Windies. Pacer Al Amin Hossain, who suffered the same fate as Gazi, made way for fellow pace bowler Rubel Hossain in the squad.
