Abject batting continues to haunt Bangladesh

Replying to the West Indies’ first innings total of 380-all out, the Bangladesh batsmen displayed yet another poor performance as they were bundled out for 161 on the stroke of lunch in the third day of the second and final Test at St Lucia yesterday.

Resuming on their overnight score of 104/7, Bangladesh lost their remaining three wickets for 57 runs to hand the hosts a first innings lead of 219 runs.

The visitors were staring at yet another batting collapse after opener Shamsur Rahman (one) departed early on Sunday. Anamul Haque (nine) soon followed suit and although Tamim Iqbal was initially looking good, he too was dismissed two runs shy of his 16th Test fifth.

Bangladesh kept on losing wickets at regular intervals as Mominul Haque (three), first Test centurion and skipper Mushfiqur Rahim (four) and Nasir Hossain (one) were dismissed cheaply. Bangladesh were reeling on 89/7.

Mahmudullah, who began the third day’s play on 13, played sensibly and reached his eighth Test fifty.

West Indian fast bowler Kemar Roach was the most successful bowler for the hosts claiming his fifth five-wicket haul in Test matches. Roach finished with bowling figures of 5/42 while paceman Jerome Taylor and spinner Sulieman Benn picked up two wickets each.

Despite being stranded 19 runs short of the follow-on target, Windies skipper Denesh Ramdin decided not to enforce the follow-on. At lunch, the West Indies were batting on 12 without loss.
