Election on the agenda in Sunday's BCB meeting

The BCB on Sunday will sit in its 17th board meeting, mainly to discuss and set initiatives for the upcoming election. The term of the current board is set to end this October, but a legal issue over amendment of the constitution made the body handicapped from preparing for the election. However, the Supreme Court on Wednesday disposed the case and ruled that the BCB has all the rights to amend the constitution. Headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, a three-member bench of the Appellate Division passed the order after disposing an appeal filed by the BCB and the National Sports Council. The SC ruling meant that now there is no impediment in the BCB holding an election and the NSC will no longer have the right to amend the constitution of cricket’s governing body in the country.

In Sunday's meeting, the board will discuss and plan of holding the Annual General Meeting and the Executive General Meeting before giving out a date for the next election. However, the board can come to a decision only after receiving and understanding the copy of the verdict. As of Saturday, it could not be confirmed if a copy of the SC verdict had reached the BCB. A possible reschedule of the fifth edition of the BPL T20 is also likely to be discussed. Although it is the BPL governing council who will take a final decision on the issue, the agenda can be discussed by the board. BPL GC’s plan to hold BPL season 2017 from November 2 came in jeopardy after the board learnt of Bangladesh hosting the 63rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference from November 1 to 8 in Dhaka. The event will see at least 800 representatives of different parliaments from across the globe travelling to Dhaka.

The guests for the event are expected to occupy almost all the leading five-star hotels in the city, making it a challenge for the eight BPL franchises to accommodate hotels at the same time. It is understood that the BPL GC has requested for an inter-ministerial meeting soon. Along with other agendas, extension of contracts of the national selection panel is also likely to be discussed. The three-member selection panel, headed by Minhajul Abedin, ended on June 30 this year. It is understood that the board is mulling extending the contract of Abedin, alongside selectors Habibul Bashar and Sajjad Ahmed, by at least a year. The current committee, led by Minhajul, took charge after Faruk Ahmed resigned from the post as chief selector in June last year.
