The beamer ‘shame’

Pakistan left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman’s inclusion in the playing XI was supposed to boost the team’s bowling attack. But the opposite happened as the 34-year-old from Sialkot was brought into attack in the 11th over. His first ball of the over slipper out of his hand and went way up and way wide to opener Imrul Kayes on strike. The second ball was also a full toss outside off and Imrul slapped it straight to deep midwicket but the umpire called delivery another “no” for its height and warned Rehman for another beamer. The disaster happened in the third delivery which was again a no ball and definitely a beamer this time to Anamul Haque. It was full toss on the body which was slapped to the midwicket boundary. The umpire handed the bowler his cap and he was not allowed to bowl in the innings for the two beamers. Rehman's game was over with humiliation and a record which was to give 8 runs off zero balls. However this was not unique in cricket. There have been at least four occasions on record where a bowler had to go off for the comical error but never after giving eight runs!

Pakistan fan go down

The journey of the Asia Cup 2014 so far has seen abundance of support for Pakistan for Bangladesh people, the team which was concerned of their participation in the tournament due to security reasons. But when it comes down to a Bangladesh game, the cricket crazy nation is uncompromising. The stands at Mirpur during the Bangladesh-Pakistan game were packed with Bangladesh flag. However there was a supporter for Pakistan at Shaheed Jewel Stand who was wrapped around with a Pakistan flag. But the lone Pakistan supporter after heavy boos fried by the stand full of Bangladesh supporters, had to fold the Pakistan flag and put inside in his backpack – a move for survival.
