Bangladesh lift U-19 WC Plate Championship

Bangladesh Under-19 lifted the Plate title of the Under-19 World Cup for the fourth time after beating New Zealand Under-19 by 77 runs in the Plates final at Abu Dhabi yesterday.

Bangladesh batted first and made a modest 223 in 47 overs. In reply it was Mosaddek Hossain’s four-wicket haul and tight bowling from the winners that tied New Zealand to 146 for nine in 50 overs.

The young Tigers rode on fifties from Shadman Islam and Liton Das as the pair added 124 runs for the second wicket to set a platform for a big total. Liton, the dominant of the two, struck 10 fours and a six in his 75-ball 79 while Shadman was the unlucky one to register his second hundred in the tournament.

Shadman got out on 97 from 113 balls which included 13 boundaries. In the meantime, Liton’s dismissal triggered a collapse as the Bangladesh side slipped from 145 for two to 223 all out.

New Zealand never looked comfortable in their run chase against the Bangladeshi spinners after losing their first wicket on 26. The Bangladesh bowlers did not allow the New Zealand batsmen to score freely, with their first three bowlers conceding 73 runs in 21 overs together. The batting side lost wickets in regular intervals as Mosaddek caused the most damage having claimed four wickets for just 23 runs in his 10-over quota that also had four maidens.
