An all-round performance by veteran spinner Abdur Razzak steered Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club to a 70 runs victory in the re-match against Brothers Union in the Dhaka Premier League yesterday.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board disciplinary committee ordered a rematch between Sheikh Jamal and Brothers after finding no clear direction in the tournament by-laws after the Dhanmondi based club objected to the participation of the suspended Suhrawadi Shuvo during the previously scheduled match between the two sides on November 9. Brothers had won the game by six wickets to confirm a berth in the Super Six phase but the objection by Jamal over Sohrawardi came as the obstacle.
The defeat was not taken lightly by the Brothers’ players and officials. The club objected to the participation of Razzaq who was vital in Jamal’s victory with both bat and bowl. The national cricketer added 39 unbeaten runs to see Jamal post 282 in 50 overs, losing seven wickets. Later he led the bowling charts, picking up three wickets and restricting Brothers to 212 in 46 overs.
Brothers placed an objection over the participation of Razzak, who was rested by the BCB until November 20.
“We have placed a written complaint to the BCB and the CCDM (Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis) after the game. We also had injured key member like Tamim (Iqbal) but never made him play even though the game was vital for us,” said Brothers Union manager Amin Khan to the Dhaka Tribune yesterday.
Tamim was ruled out of the ODI series against New Zealand earlier this month with a lower abdominal strain and was advised to rest for at least four weeks.
“I had a talk with him (Tamim) before the game and he said he can join if the team wants. But we thought not to put him in more physical danger and violate BCB’s advice,” Amin informed.
However CCDM is helpless over the matter and sources have informed that the protest was weak.
“We hardly have anything to do about this matter to be honest. If a player thinks that he is fit to play, what can we do in this issue?” said CCDM secretary Rakib Haider Pavel yesterday. Rakib also informed that the CCDM replied to Brothers’ protest saying nothing can be done regarding this issue.
It was learnt that Razzak took permission from the BCB physiotherapist and played the game for Sheikh Jamal and any necessary action for not following BCB’s advice can only be taken by the BCB cricket operations.
“We (BCB cricket operations) didn’t find it to be an offence. Razzak took permission of the national team physiotherapist (Vibhav Singh) and then played the game. He followed the protocol, asked for permission so he never actually violated any regulations,” said BCB cricket operations Sabbir Khan to the Dhaka Tribune yesterday.
