Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das struck a superb century as the Tigers built a massive target for Afghanistan in the one-off Test at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Monday.
Litton's hundred strengthened Bangladesh's position in the match after the visitors established a 106-run first-innings lead, thanks largely to a devastating bowling display from Hasan Mahmud and Ebadot Hossain on the third day.
Bangladesh had finished Sunday's play at 223-6 in their second innings, extending their overall lead to 329 runs. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 82 and veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim made 81 to rescue the innings after the Tigers slipped to 53-3.
Litton, who resumed the fourth morning unbeaten on five, capitalised on two dropped catches to reach his century and put Bangladesh firmly in control. His partnership with Mehidy Hasan Miraz proved crucial in frustrating Afghanistan's bowlers and extending the visitors' advantage.
Mehidy also made a valuable contribution, supporting Litton as Bangladesh's seventh-wicket stand carried the total beyond 300. The pair's resistance ensured Afghanistan faced a daunting challenge in the fourth innings.
Earlier, Afghanistan were dismissed for 240 in reply to Bangladesh's first-innings 346. Hasan Mahmud claimed 5-55, including a hat-trick, becoming the first Bangladesh fast bowler to achieve the feat in Test cricket. Ebadot Hossain complemented him with four wickets.
Afghanistan captain Rahmat Shah had earlier scored an unbeaten 105, while Abdul Malik contributed 62, but their efforts could not prevent Bangladesh from securing a significant first-innings deficit.
Bangladesh eventually declared their second innings at 372-7, setting Afghanistan a target of 479 runs for victory.
The Tigers will now look to their bowlers to finish the job and secure a memorable Test victory.
