Bonanza for Bangladesh on rankings following Darwin Test win

Bangladesh's red-ball stars have been rewarded for their remarkable victory over Australia in the first Test in Darwin by making big gains on the latest ICC Men's Test Player Rankings.

Tigers produced a superb team performance to defeat Australia by nine wickets in the opening match of their ICC World Test Championship series and they received strong contributions from a variety of players.

Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto struck an excellent innings of 84 in the first innings to help setup the victory and the right-hander shot up nine places to 20th on the latest rankings for Test batters as a result.

Teammate Mominul Haque (up five rungs to 31st) and Australia all-rounder Cameron Green (up five slots to 30th) also made ground on this list, while Travis Head relinquished his place as the top-ranked Test batter following scores of 22 and 17 across the match.

It saw Head drops three spots to fourth overall, with England right-hander Harry Brook re-claiming his position at the top ahead of teammate Joe Root and Australia veteran Steve Smith.

There's just 33 rating points between those first four batters, meaning there could be further movement following England's home Test series with Pakistan and the second match of Australia's series against Bangladesh.

India pacer Jasprit Bumrah retains his place at the top of the latest rankings for Test bowlers despite his absence in Galle for the first Test against Sri Lanka, with Bangladesh duo Mehidy Hasan (up three spots to 24th) and Hasan Mahmud (up 26 rungs to 38th) the big movers in this category.

Mehidy collected a five-wicket haul during Australia's second innings in Darwin, while Mahmud picked up nine scalps across the match to be adjudged the Player of the Match.

There was also some change to the latest ODI rankings this week following the completion of Ireland's home series with Afghanistan, with players from both sides making eye-catching progress.

Afghanistan impressed with a 4-0 series triumph ahead of next year's ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, with skipper Rashid Khan increasing his lead as the No.1 ranked bowler in 50-over cricket following his 12 scalps across the five-game series.

Rashid was ably supported by Azmatullah Omarzai across the series, with the right-arm seamer gaining nine places to jump to 19th for ODI bowlers after he collected eight wickets from four appearances.

There was further joy for Afghanistan as Sediqullah Atal rose 37 slots to move to 33rd for ODI batters following his 313 runs across the series, while Ireland are boosted by gains on the same list for Curtis Campher (up 23 places to 36th) and Andrew Balbirnie (up five spots to equal 47th).
