Bangladesh Women opened their ODI series against Sri Lanka with a thrilling three-wicket victory, powered by a composed and match-defining innings from Sharmin Akter Supta at the Rajshahi Divisional Stadium on Monday.
Chasing a competitive target of 206, Bangladesh reached 206 for 7 in 48.3 overs, overcoming early setbacks to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The match also marked a historic occasion for Rajshahi, which hosted its first-ever women’s international fixture, made even more memorable by the home side’s dramatic win.
The chase got off to a shaky start as Bangladesh lost both openers cheaply. Juairiya Ferdaus was dismissed for 5, while Sharmin Sultana fell without scoring, leaving the hosts under early pressure. Sharmin Akter Supta then stepped up to anchor the innings with a patient and determined knock of 86 from 127 deliveries, striking 13 boundaries along the way.
She found valuable support from Sobhana Mostary, who contributed a fluent 41 before being forced to retire hurt. The pair stitched together a crucial 87-run partnership for the fourth wicket, steadying the innings and reviving Bangladesh’s hopes after the early collapse.
Even after Mostary’s departure, Sharmin continued to hold the innings together, showing resilience and composure as wickets fell at regular intervals from the other end. Her effort ensured Bangladesh remained on track before the lower order held their nerve to complete the chase in the closing stages.
Earlier, Sri Lanka posted 205 for 9 in their allotted 50 overs after being put in to bat. Their innings was built around two solid half-centuries, with Imesha Dulani scoring 52 and Hansima Karunaratne adding 54. Kavisha Dilhari also made a useful contribution with 30, helping the visitors cross the 200-run mark.
For Bangladesh, Ritu Moni was the standout performer with the ball, finishing with impressive figures of 3 for 36. Her disciplined bowling played a key role in restricting Sri Lanka to a manageable total.
Sri Lanka’s Dewmi Vihanga was the pick of their bowlers, claiming 3 for 43, but her efforts were not enough to prevent Bangladesh from sealing a memorable victory.
With this win, Bangladesh have taken an early advantage in the series and will look to carry the momentum into the remaining matches.
