Bangladesh thrash Ireland by 217 runs to seal Dhaka Test and sweep series

Bangladesh wrapped up a commanding 217-run triumph over Ireland in Dhaka on Sunday, completing a clean 2–0 sweep of the two-match Test series.

The hosts were in control from the outset of the contest, powered by imposing batting performances and a relentless spin unit centred around Taijul Islam and Hasan Murad.

Set a towering 509 to chase, Ireland were eventually dismissed for 291 late on the fifth afternoon. Bangladesh required 59.3 overs on the final day to separate the last four Irish wickets, steadily tightening their grip on an increasingly responsive Mirpur surface.

Taijul once again proved decisive. After taking four wickets in the first innings, he claimed another four in the second to finish with eight in the match. With his latest haul, the left-arm spinner surpassed Shakib Al Hasan to become Bangladesh’s highest wicket-taker in Test history, now sitting at 249 scalps.

Murad matched Taijul’s second-innings impact with four wickets of his own, reinforcing his growing reputation as Bangladesh’s next major spin force.

Ireland’s resistance was led by Curtis Campher, who played one of the most tenacious fourth-innings knocks ever seen at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. He battled through 259 balls for an unbeaten 71 — the longest fourth-innings stay recorded at the venue. Harry Tector chipped in with a well-constructed 50, but steady dismissals at the other end undermined their effort.

Bangladesh’s dominance was rooted in their hefty first-innings total of 476. Mushfiqur Rahim struck a century, Liton Das crafted a stylish 128, and Mominul Haque added 63, while openers Shadman Islam and Mahmudul Hasan Joy laid the foundation with composed starts. Although Andy McBrine picked up six wickets, Ireland struggled to prevent Bangladesh from dictating the pace of the match.

Ireland replied with 265, thanks to Lorcan Tucker’s unbeaten 75 and Jordan Neill’s 49. However, repeated middle-order stumbles — largely engineered by Taijul and Murad, who shared six — kept them well behind.

Bangladesh batted briskly in the second innings, declaring at 297 for four. Mominul (87), Shadman (78), and Joy (60) continued their run of form, while Mushfiqur added an unbeaten 53 — a fitting contribution in a historic moment for him.

This Test was Mushfiqur Rahim’s 100th appearance, making him the first Bangladeshi player to reach the milestone. He marked the occasion with a century in the first innings and a fifty in the second, joining the select group of only 11 batters who have scored a hundred in their 100th Test.

Bangladesh’s bowlers completed the job across the final two days, as Taijul, Murad, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and Khaled Ahmed combined to wear down the Irish lineup and seal an emphatic series win.
