The Bangladesh women’s cricket team kicked off their Cricket World Cup Qualifiers campaign in stunning fashion, registering a record-breaking 178-run victory over Thailand at LCCA Ground in Lahore, Pakistan.
Asked to bat first, the Tigresses posted their highest-ever total in Women’s One Day Internationals, reaching 271 for three in 50 overs.
This surpassed their previous best of 252 for four against Ireland in Mirpur.
The massive win also marked Bangladesh’s biggest margin of victory in WODIs, comfortably eclipsing their previous record 154-run win, also against Ireland.
Skipper Nigar Sultana Joty starred with the bat, smashing a blistering maiden century — 101 off just 80 deliveries — making her the fastest Bangladeshi woman to score a WODI hundred.
She broke the earlier record set by Fargana Hoque Pinky, who reached her ton in 156 balls against India last year.
Joty also set a new national record for most runs scored in boundaries in a WODI innings, racking up 66 boundary runs to surpass Sharmin Akhter Supta’s previous best of 56.
Joty and Sharmin shared a 152-run stand for the third wicket — now the highest partnership for that wicket in Bangladesh’s WODI history, breaking the previous record of 127 between Rumana Ahmed and Sharmin.
Thailand’s Onnicha Kamchomphu had a forgettable outing with the ball, conceding 58 runs in nine overs — the most by a Thai bowler in WODIs.
Bangladesh’s dominance continued with the ball, as spinners Fahima Khatun and Jannatul Ferdous both claimed five-wicket hauls — the first time two Bangladeshi bowlers have achieved this feat in the same WODI match.
