MI Cape Town claimed their first ever SA20 title Saturday after beating Sunrisers Eastern Cape by 76 runs in a one-sided final in Johannesburg.
Batting first against two-time winners Eastern Cape in the grand finale of the competition’s third edition, Cape Town posted a challenging 181/8 riding on useful contributions from Connor Esterhuizen (39), Dewald Brevis (38) and Ryan Rickelton (33).
Player of the tournament Marco Jansen, Richard Gleeson and Liam Dawson bagged two wickets each for Eastern Cape, who could only muster 105 in reply before getting dismissed in 18.4 overs.
For Cape Town, Kagiso Rabada finished with 4/25 but Trent Boult was adjudged player of the final for his figure of 2/9 from four overs.
Only three Eastern Cape batters – Tom Abell (30), Tony de Zorzi (26) and Tristan Stubbs (15) – scored in double digit as Cape Town’s George Linde (2/20) and Rashid Khan (1/19) ratcheted up the pressure.
