Local boy Tamim Iqbal continued his purple patch by hitting 48-ball 61 as defending champions Fortune Barishal crushed Dhaka Capitals by eight wickets in the first match of the Chittagong phase of the Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 2024-25 season at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium Thursday.
The Capitals, who posted BPL record 254/1 in their previous match for a 149-run rout of Durbar Rajshahi, this time could master only 139 before getting dismissed in 19.3 overs.
Barishal effortlessly gunned down the target by reaching 145/2 with four overs to spare with former England star Dawid Malan, playing his first game this season, providing the finishing touch, remaining unbeaten on a 41-ball 49.
Jahandad Khan, who was unbeaten on 13 alongside him, confirmed the victory with a six.
But captain Tamim played the anchor role after the early departure of Nazmul Hossain Shanto (two).
He shared 117 runs with Malan for the second wicket in which the former Bangladesh skipper dominated fully, clubbing half a dozen fours and one six.
With the side just 15 runs shy of victory, Tamim was dismissed by his Dhaka counterpart Thisara Perera.
However, his departure mattered little with Malan in such supreme touch.
Earlier, batting first, Dhaka struggled to tick the scoreboard along right from the beginning.
Liton Das, who hammered a record-breaking century in the last clash, took 10 balls to open his account before getting out for just 13 off 17.
The Dhaka innings was all about Tanzid Hasan Tamim, who followed up his 108 in the last encounter with 44-ball 62, decorated with two fours and four sixes.
Amid wickets tumbling around him, the opener held one end firmly and became the seventh batter out after helping the side go past 100.
Farmanullah with 22 was the other notable scorer.
Left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam took 3/39 while Pakistani recruit Faheem Ashraf scalped 2/23 to wreck havoc on Dhaka.
The victory in the last tie remains Dhaka's only success in eight attempts.
Barishal are third following their fourth triumph in six matches.
