South Africa defeat Bangladesh by seven wickets in first Test

South Africa chased down their 106-run target for the loss of three wickets and clinched a comfortable seven-wicket victory against hosts Bangladesh to go 1-0 up in the two-match Test series.

Opener Tony de Zorzi scored 41 while Tristan Stubbs was unbeaten on 30 as the Proteas earned their first Test win in Asia in a decade.

Taijul Islam took all three wickets for the Tigers.

Earlier Thursday, Bangladesh were bowled out for 307 in their second innings to set a moderate target of 106 for the visitors in Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

The Tigers had started day four on 283 for seven with Mehedi Hasan Miraz unbeaten on 87 and Nayeem Hasan on 16.

The in-form Kagiso Rabada struck in the very first over as Nayeem was trapped in front in just the third ball of the day.

Taijul (seven) departed three overs later and Miraz, Bangladesh's highest Test run-scorer this year, was the last wicket fall as the all-rounder missed a well-deserved second Test century by getting out on 97 off 191 deliveries.

Rabada took six wickets for the Proteas while Keshav Maharaj bagged three.

South Africa had earlier posted 308 in their first innings in reply to Bangladesh’s paltry 106.

The second and final Test begins in Chittagong's Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium next Tuesday.
