Dhaka Premier League’s Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club have assured its cricketers that there would not be any difficulty with their payments for the 2012-13 season. Many cricketers expressed concern over remuneration after a new system for players recruitment was introduced this season, but the Dhanmondi club insists there will be no problems on that front.
The new system, known as “player by choice”, includes a payment method reminiscent to that used in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), which has seen many problems with regards to the players not being paid.
The cricketers participating in this season’s competition will be paid in three installments – 40% before the start of the tournament, 30% before the start of the Super League and the final 30% within a month of the tournament concluding. Additionally, the national cricketers will be paid on prorate basis, i.e. based on the number of matches they play.
Mushfiqur Rahman Mohon, who was the chairman of the BPL team Duronto Rajshahi – who were plagued with payment troubles – is the chairman of the club’s cricket committee.
Dhanmondi skipper Mushfiqur Rahim hoped that the club will be regular in making payments. “As far as I know, no players were unpaid last season. I played for this team last year and from what I have seen, their payment system was excellent. I hope they will maintain that trend this year,” Mushfiqur told reporters at the players’ introduction ceremony on the club premises yesterday.
Club president Monjur Quader has also assured the players of making payments on time. “Our system is smooth and last season, the players just had to go to the accounts department to get their payment. We were never blamed for making any hassle with the payment. So the players can feel relaxed about it,” he said.
“We were number four in the point table last season. Personally that was good season for me but for the club, it wasn’t so good. We want to turn the tables this year and want to be the number one team,” said skipper Mushfiq.
Chairman Mushfiqur said that the club had roped in Zimbabwean duo Elton Chigumbura and Charles Coventry and Sri Lankan Dilshan Munaweera for the whole season. He also hinted that Sri Lankan star Kumar Sangakkara would play two matches for Jamal, but would not disclose which matches those might be.
