Bangladesh cricketer Shakib al Hasan finds himself embroiled in controversy as his sister Janatul Hasan’s name has emerged in a probe by India’s Enforcement Directorate regarding a case over the Mahadev online betting app.
India's financial investigation agency, the Enforcement Directorate, has been conducting raids in this connection, as reported by Indian media outlets.
In a statement released Friday, the directorate announced the arrest of two associates linked to the app's promoter, Hari Shankar Tibrewal.
The investigation has unveiled a complex network of money laundering and investments stemming from illicit gaming activities.
One of the accused individuals, Suraj Chokhani, is reported to have invested in 11wickets, a Bangladesh-based online platform.
Janatul, Shakib's sister, is identified as one of Chokhani's partners in this venture.
The Enforcement Directorate's findings paint a grim picture of the Mahadev app, which facilitated unlawful gambling on various sports, raking in a staggering Rs200 crore (approximately $24m) per day.
This revelation casts a dark cloud over Shakib's reputation.
The International Cricket Council had previously imposed a one-year ban on him in 2019 for his failure to report multiple approaches from bookmakers.
Moreover, in 2022, he faced criticism for associating himself with a betting company, ultimately withdrawing from the deal under pressure from the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
The star all-rounder became the lawmaker for Magura-1 from the Awami League in the January 7 election.
