Lipu appointed new chief of national selection panel

The Bangladesh Cricket Board decided to overhaul the national selection panel in the ninth board of directors’ meeting in Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium Monday.

Former cricketer Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu has been named head of the newly formed national selection panel involving former Bangladesh players Abdur Razzak and Hannan Sarkar.

The decision meant exclusion of Minhajul Abedin and Habibul Bashar from the job.

The tenure of the previous three-member selection panel led by Minhajul officially ended on December 31, 2023 and has so far run through extension handed out.

Minhajul, who had been part of the selection panel since 2011, was appointed chief selector in 2016 and had held the post since then.

According to BCB boss Nazmul Hasan, both Minhajul and Bashar will be assigned honorable posts in the board going ahead.

“There were many names in the list [for chief of the national selection panel] but when we saw Lipu bhai’s name we didn’t have to look anywhere else. The board right away decided to assign him as the head of the new selection panel involving Razzak and Hannan,” informed Nazmul.

The board in the meeting also received the report of Bangladesh’s humiliating failure in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India.

The BCB chief however, refrained from making a comment on the matter.
