Top-order batter Nazmul Hossain Shanto has been named the Bangladesh captain in all three formats of the game for year 2024.
The decision was taken in the ninth Bangladesh Cricket Board's board of directors meeting held at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium Monday.
Shanto has been named captain of Bangladesh in Test, One Day International and Twenty20 International for this year on the back of all-rounder Shakib al Hasan’s uncertain availability from international cricket due to a retinal condition in his left eye.
BCB president Nazmul Hasan while speaking to the media following the meeting informed that Shakib was still their No 1 choice for captaincy but they had to make the change owing to his eye problems.
Shanto is thus set to lead Bangladesh in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup scheduled to be held in the United States and the West Indies in June this year.
“We discussed at length about captaincy. Shanto will lead the national team in Test, ODI and T20I this year. Shakib’s availability is uncertain due to his eye condition. We didn’t want to take any chances given that we have a series (against Sri Lanka) right after Bangladesh Premier League and also the T20 World Cup,” said Nazmul.
Shanto had led the team against New Zealand both home and away last year in the absence of regular captain Shakib.
Under Shanto's leadership, Bangladesh registered their first ODI and T20I victory against the Kiwis in New Zealand and also a home Test win against the Black Caps.
