Young ton propels Kiwis to convincing victory in 1st ODI

Will Young’s impressive knock of 105 and Tom Latham's solid contribution with 92 laid the groundwork for New Zealand's 44-run victory over Bangladesh Sunday in the first one-day international.

The match had been shortened to 30 overs per team due to rain.

In accordance with the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern system, Bangladesh's revised target was set at 245.

However, they fell short, concluding their 30 overs at 200/9.

Debutant seamer Josh Clarkson played a pivotal role for New Zealand, taking 2/24 as one of the key bowlers.

Despite Amanul Haque's resilient 43 off 39 balls and Afif Hossain's quick 38 off 28, Bangladesh seemed on course to reach their winning target at times.

Nevertheless, New Zealand managed to secure crucial wickets at key junctures, ultimately emerging victorious in a clash that, due to delays, concluded amid gathering darkness.

Earlier, the home side burst into life in the final stages of their innings in Dunedin after intermittent showers forced three delays, each time reducing the number of overs.

New Zealand lost two wickets in the opening over when seamer Shoriful Islam had Rachin Ravindra caught behind and induced an edge off Henry Nicholls to the slip cordon.

Shoriful's early strikes justified his team's decision to bowl first in overcast condition.

New Zealand recovered brilliantly with a 171-run stand for the third wicket between Young, who faced 84 deliveries, and captain Latham.

The stand straddled two stoppages, which forced the match from 46 overs, to 40 and then to 30.

The pair hit out in brutal fashion over the last 10.4 overs as the hosts chalked up a remarkable 131 runs.

Latham fell short of his eighth ODI century before being bowled by off-spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz.

Young was run out in the final over, when three wickets fell.

Miraz (1/53 off five overs) and Soumya Sarkar (0/63 off six) were punished late in the innings while Shoriful was comfortably Bangladesh's best bowler, taking 2/28 off six overs.

All-rounder Josh Clarkson and seamer William O'Rourke both made their debuts for New Zealand, who have rested several senior players for the series.
