The three-member special committee formed by the Bangladesh Cricket Board has started work to unearth the reasons behind the national team’s horrible performance in the recently concluded World Cup.
On the first day of the hearings, Sunday, the committee chaired by veteran BCB director Enayet Hossain Siraj [convenor] spoke to national selection panel chief Minhajul Abedin and selector Habibul Bashar.
Among the cricketers from the Bangladesh squad in the World Cup, left-arm paceman Mustafizur Rahman and wicketkeeper-batter Liton Das met the committee.
BCB directors Mahbubul Anam and Akram Khan are the other two members of the committee.
On day two of the proceedings, Monday, the committee is set to meet team manager for the World Cup Rabeed Imam and two other players.
Names of the two cricketers were however, unknown when this report was filed.
While the selectors, team officials and players refrained from making any comment, the special committee convenor Enayet informed that the meetings are not for “inquiry” but discussion to find the facts behind the terrible performance of the team in the World Cup held in India.
“The thing is that we are discussing with everybody. It's not an inquiry. The failings we had in the World Cup where our results did not go according to expectations, meant that we had to talk to everyone so that in the future we can take the team to higher levels,” said Enayet to the media Sunday.
“We will hand our findings to the board and they will give you all the details,” he said.
Enayet pressed that there is no given deadline for the committee to present its findings thus there is no urgency.
The committee is yet to decide the schedule of its meeting with Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha and captain Shakib al Hasan, while some of the players are involved in the ongoing Test series against New Zealand.
It is understood that Hathurusingha, Shakib and team director for the World Cup Khaled Mahmud have already presented their assessment report.
Bangladesh in this World Cup registered their worst performance in International Cricket Council’s flagship event since 2003.
The side travelled to India with high hopes amid issues in the dressing room but could win only two out of nine matches and finished eighth in the 10-team tournament.
Bangladesh won three games in each of the last four World Cups, in 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019.
