Shakib urges Tigers to move on from England loss

Bangladesh captain Shakib al Hasan urged his teammates to put the England defeat behind them and look forward to their remaining fixtures in the World Cup.

The Tigers began their World Cup campaign brightly, defeating Afghanistan by six wickets in Dharamshala last Saturday but were brought right back down to earth by world champions England at the same venue Tuesday.

Asked to bat first, the Three Lions posted an imposing 364 for the loss of nine wickets in their 50 overs, riding on opener Dawid Malan’s career best One Day International score of 140 off just 107 balls, featuring 16 fours and five sixes.

Malan was ably supported by No 3 batter Joe Root (82 off 68) and fellow opening batter Jonny Bairstow (52 off 59).

Off-spinner Mahedi Hasan bagged four wickets while left-arm seamer Shoriful Islam picked up three to keep England below the 400-mark.

In reply, the Tigers fell well short by 137 runs, getting all out for 227 in 48.2 overs, despite half-centuries from opening batsman Liton Das (76 off 66) and wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim (51 off 64).

Left-arm paceman Reece Topley led the way with 4/43 while right-arm pacer Chris Woakes took two.

“Long tournament. We have to move on and we have some tough matches coming up. We cannot be bogged down. We have to move on and think about all the positives we have been doing,” said Shakib after the game.

“Was a good toss to win, was colder weather then. There was some rain last night. We did not start well, first 10 overs especially. When you give them a sniff they always come hard at us. We came back strongly. But it was a little too late. When you lose four early wickets in 10 overs, you are not going to get 350.

“We had a very good plan, but we couldn't execute it. We were here and there. First five-six overs the ball l was swinging nicely. That's when the momentum went to the England side. We restricted them. Here 320-330 you fancy your chances which we couldn't get.”

The men in red and green will next take on New Zealand Friday in Chennai.
