Jalal: Tanzim sorry for social media remarks

Bangladesh's young fast bowler Tanzim Hasan Sakib has apologized to the Bangladesh Cricket Board and informed that he regrets making controversial statements on social media.

The 20-year old cricketer also claimed his posts were not aimed to hurt any individual and that he does not possess a negative mentality towards women.

Member of the Bangladesh Under-19 World Cup winning team, Tanzim became embroiled in controversy earlier this week over misogynistic social media posts condemning working women.

The right-arm paceman came under fire from women's rights activists and feminists after his social media posts came to light.

BCB cricket operations committee chairman Jalal Younus while speaking to the media at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium Tuesday informed that the board had a discussion with the young cricketer.

“We [BCB cricket operations] spoke to Tanzim and brought his attention towards the social media posts. The BCB media department also communicated with him on the matter. His reply was that he never made those posts with the intention to hurt anyone and were without any motive or intention. He informed us that he is sorry if his posts have hurt anyone,” said BCB director Jalal.

“He took responsibility for the posts, but said he clarified that they were not against women. We have told him to be wary and we have relayed to him that BCB will monitor any further posts he makes,” he added.

Jalal however, ruled out chances of any stern action against the young cricketer.

“He [Tanzim] said he is sorry and we have warned him. He said he will refrain from making such posts in future. He said he is not against women and has accepted his fault,” said Jalal.

“We will keep him under observation. Even his family is also sorry and unhappy about the situation. They never expected Tanzim to fall in such a situation. He is still young; we have a World Cup ahead for which we have warned him. We will be bound to take strict decisions against him if he repeats his actions,” the former cricketer added.

Tanzim got into the controversy just days after making a brilliant international debut, in the just concluded Asia Cup 2023.

The bowler had a dream debut as he took the wicket of India captain Rohit Sharma in his very first over in international cricket when the neighbors met in the Asia Cup Super Fours Friday, before holding his nerve in the final over to secure a historic victory for Bangladesh.

Tanzim finished with two wickets in the game.
