The partnership that teaches a vital cricketing lesson

Port city Chittagong was hit by the tremor of a frightening earthquake in the early morning and few hours later Bangladesh team suffered a jolt as they lost top four batsmen for just 49 in the first day of their first Test match against Pakistan in the same city at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

Bangladesh cricket has recently been going through one calamity after another as they had a horrendous T20 World Cup before a clean sweep against Pakistan in the shortest format, and things were exacerbated as they lost some of their key members to injuries.

Against a strong opponent, hosts Bangladesh, whose Test record is nothing short of abysmal, fate seemed to be written on the wall when two diminutive men - Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das - both of whom faced widespread battering recently due to bad patch of form - joined together against the pumped up visitors.

Like innumerable other times actually that set up the stage for scribing history and the aforementioned men did exactly that with their unbroken double ton stand that not only repaired the innings but also put their side in a vantage position.

For some it was hardly surprising as these two men are regarded as the most technically gifted.

However, their under-achievement compared to their caliber is a huge disappointment.

Like many short statured Asian batsmen, both Mushfiq and Liton use their low center of gravities as an advantage of playing all kinds of shots.

Liton may look more aesthetic with his late cuts and square drives but his senior partner Mushfiq is more flexible and have almost all kinds of shots in his repertoire.

As a result, when they form a partnership the spectators enjoy the beauty of batting.

However, Mushfiq, in his long career has an average hovering under 40 that clearly is an under-achievement going by his class and ability.

While Liton’s situation is even worse as his average hardly reached 30.

Liton, however, has age in his side and yesterday's innings would be a stark reminder what he can do and the sky must be his limit if his incredible abilities are harnessed by fixing his temperament and mindset.

Talking about mindset, it was seen on countless occasions Mushfiq losing his nerve in crux situations that hindered him from being a good batsman to a great one.

He even lost his temper with widespread criticism on social media and off the field after succumbing to shots like reverse-sweep time and again.

To his credit he was rock solid yesterday and gave huge belief to Liton.

And their amazing partnership not only brushed off all off field distractions but also toyed with Pakistan attack, regarded as one of the best, thus illustrating their abilities.

And it showed what they can do if they keep their mindset positive and hold on to the determination .

The game is just one-day old with as many as four days to go on a flat looking pitch.

So, it is obviously immature to put eulogy and become ecstatic about the partnership.

And there are many bigger partnerships in Bangladesh's history.

But this partnership, the day when two great batters conquered all the odds, will be a vital reminder that belligerence and determination are as important, if not more significant, as immense skill.
