Nazmul: Liton will lead in Afghanistan Test

Wicketkeeper-batsman Liton Das will lead Bangladesh in the upcoming one-off Test match at home against Afghanistan in the absence of captain Shakib al Hasan.

Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan while speaking to the media in Dhaka Friday said there should be no confusion as the vice-captain, Liton, should be in charge of the team with Shakib unavailable due to injury.

Star all-rounder Shakib was sidelined for six months after sustaining a finger injury during the series against Ireland in England earlier this month.

The left-arm all-rounder had missed the third and final one day international against the Irish due to the injury.

Since then, there has been speculation in the cricket arena of the country and media reports suggested Liton has not been willing to lead the Bangladesh Test team against visitors Afghanistan.

The smoke however, has now been cleared by BCB chief Nazmul.

“As captain Shakib is injured, naturally the vice-captain now has to lead the team. Liton is the vice-captain. I have heard nothing else so far on this so there is no point in making a comment,” said Nazmul.

The Afghans are scheduled to reach Dhaka on June 10 and feature in the only Test in Mirpur from June 14-18.

There will then be a break to the series for Eid-ul-Azha during which Afghanistan will travel to India to contest three ODIs against the hosts.

Afghanistan will return to Bangladesh on July 1 to complete the series and in this phase play three ODIs, scheduled to be held in Chittagong on July 5, 8 and 11 respectively.

The two teams will then travel to Sylhet to fight it out in the two Twenty20 Internationals on July 14 and 16 respectively.
