Bangladesh eye Test win to end perfect home series

Hosts Bangladesh will look to maintain their dominance over visitors Ireland when the two sides meet in the solitary Test match, set to get underway at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium Tuesday.

Bangladesh however, will miss spearhead Taskin Ahmed due to a side strain.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board named Rejaur Rahman Raja as Taskin's replacement.

In this bilateral series, Bangladesh so far have secured the three-match one-day international series 2-0 and also won the Twenty20 international series 2-1.

And to hold onto the supremacy, the hosts have announced their best and strongest possible Test squad for which the BCB even delayed the participation of Shakib al Hasan and Liton Das in the ongoing Indian Premier League.

However, given the strength of Ireland in red-ball cricket, the level of desperation showed by Bangladesh to have the best squad has raised eyebrows, and was to some extent laughed upon.

Having achieved Test status in 2017, Ireland contested only three Tests till date and have nine uncapped players in the squad among whom three never played first-class cricket before.

They also have just four members from their last Test played in 2019.

On the contrary, Bangladesh have 473 caps in total in their Test squad and one can easily predict that the contest would most likely be an uneven one.

Led by Shakib, Bangladesh have veteran opener Tamim Iqbal and right-arm spearhead Ebadot Hossain back to the fold having missed out on the previous Tests – at home against India in December last year.

The Bangladesh think tank will opt for Shadman Islam or Mahmudul Hasan Joy to partner Tamim at the top.

Nazmul Hossain Shanto, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib are there to make up the top- and middle-order.

The hosts though will also miss the services of newbie batter Zakir Hasan.

The left-hander had a record debut in the previous series, against India, having scored a hundred but is out against Ireland due to a left thumb injury.

Opener Shadman has found a way back to the Test squad as Zakir's replacement.

The Bangladesh pace squadron has been breathing fire recently and will be expected to maintain their supremacy amid the absence of speedster Taskin.

The management has options in Ebadot, Khaled Ahmed, Shoriful Islam and Raja to take the charge.

The spin department meanwhile will be made up from Shakib, Mehedi Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam.

Ireland on the other hand, know all too well the vast difference that exists between the two countries.

Amid the daunting challenge, they can look for inspiration from their seven-wicket win in the third and final T20I to avoid a series whitewash and this has been their only victory in the month-long tour.

The Irish side will have regular captain Andy Balbirnie back in charge.

The right-handed batter following the ODI series defeat took a break from the T20I matches.

In terms of experience, the most seasoned in the visiting camp is former Zimbabwe cricketer Peter Moor, who now plays for Ireland.

However, all the eight Tests played by this wicketkeeper-batter has been for Zimbabwe, including the last in 2018 against Bangladesh in Mirpur.
