Robin Das, the young English batsman who has Bangladesh origin, is excited to take part in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League.
The 20-year old Robin, whose father Mridul Das was born in Sunamganj district of Bangladesh, plays for Essex and was born in Leytonstone on February 27, 2002.
He scored an unbeaten 200 for Essex County Cricket Club U-16 side Wanstead CC in the Shepard Neame Premier League in the Essex matchplay quarter-final competition against Brentwood CC on July 15, 2018.
He made his List A debut on August 5, 2022, for Essex in the 2022 Royal London One-Day Cup.
He was in the draft of players list in the 2020 season of BPL but was not picked.
But this time around the young top-order batsman is playing for Dhaka Dominators and already in the country to play the 20-over tournament.
“I am really thrilled, Bangladesh is the country of my father, he used to tell me stories of our home in Bangladesh and is really happy I came to play this tournament,” said Robin while talking to the media after the practice session at academy ground in Mirpur Monday.
“My family members are all very happy, and really thrilled. Not only them, my relatives are also joyous. They came to receive me at the airport. They were really happy to see me in Bangladesh. I'm hoping they will also get to see me play.
“When I travel with my team to Sylhet, I will make plans to meet my relatives (in Sunamganj). I will visit my relatives, members of my father's family. It will be a special occasion for me to play in Sylhet, my father's hometown.”
Robin came to the limelight in international cricket when he came in as a substitute fielder for England during their first Test against New Zealand at Lord's.
Robin and his Essex team mate Nikhil Gorantala took the field as substitutes.
“It was a big opportunity for me, a nice experience. I learned a lot. It was nice to feel the Test match vibe at Lord's. I learned a lot of things from the players, overall it was a great experience,” he said.
Although he has Bangladesh origin, he made his intentions clear that he wants to play cricket for England in the international stage.
“I grew up in England, played county cricket for Essex. I think if the opportunity arises I would like to play (for England). My dream now is to play for England. But I don't want to close any doors of the future,” said Robin.
Robin said he follows Bangladesh cricket and that Tigers top-order batsman Liton Das inspires him.
“Liton is an outstanding cricketer. Probably he was Bangladesh's best player across all three formats last year. For me he is one of the world's best cricketers. He inspires me. I follow Bangladesh cricket, watched a lot of their games, saw Liton playing well,” Robin concluded.
