National Board of Revenue (NBR) frozen all the bank accounts of suspended national cricketer Mohammad Ashraful on Thursday.
The NBR took the step in lieu of a special clause in the Income Tax Ordinance.
The consequence of the order means Ashraful will not be able to use his bank accounts for any monetary dealings. The bar will be effective until the detective branch of the NBR issues a notice allowing use of the accounts.
When contacted, Ashraful expressed ignorance about the development. “I withdraw some money from my account in the afternoon but I am yet to get any official affirmation,” he said.
Ashraful is currently suspended from all cricketing activities after confessing to being involved in fixing two matches in the last edition of Bangladesh Premier League to the Anti Corruption and Security Unit of International Cricket Council last month.
The NBR has launched an in-depth probe regarding the wealth of Ashraful and has also sought the relevant documents of his tax circle. Whether Ashraful maintains an account in any foreign bank is also being scrutinised.
