An unbroken 71-run partnership for the eighth wicket between Shreyas Iyer and Ravichandran Ashwin guided India to victory in the second and final Test match against Bangladesh in Mirpur Sunday.
Ashwin was unbeaten on 42 while Iyer was not out on 29 as the visiting side reached the target of 145 with three wickets to spare to keep their unbeaten record intact against the Tigers in Tests.
India have never lost to Bangladesh in 13 Tests, winning 11 times and drawing twice - both largely due to rain intervention.
In the process, the tourists, who won the first Test by 188 runs in Chittagong, took one more step to qualifying for the final of the World Test Championship.
Bangladesh will now ponder what might have been after starting day four on a promising note, taking three quick wickets to leave India reeling on 74/7.
Mehedi Hasan Miraz continued his purple patch in the bilateral series against India as the off-spinner bagged his ninth five-wicket haul in Tests in the first hour of play.
Miraz, who with his maiden 50-over century had earlier inspired the Tigers to a memorable ODI series win against their neighbors, first trapped Rishabh Pant (nine) before cleaning up overnight batter Axar Patel (34) to put pressure on the Indians.
Captain Shakib al Hasan had initiated the first breakthrough of the day when he dismissed nightwatchman Jaydev Unadkat in just the second over.
Bangladesh could have further boosted their bid for a maiden Test triumph against the Indians were it not for close in fielder Mominul Haque's dropped catch of Ashwin.
Miraz was the unlucky bowler as Ashwin, batting on just one, made full use of the missed opportunity.
Had Mominul taken that catch, India would have been reduced to 80/8, requiring 65 more runs for victory.
Instead, the Indian batting duo kicked on from there, with Iyer first releasing the pressure with a boundary - his team's first in 68 balls.
The undefeated eighth wicket pair knew just hanging around at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on a day four wicket would get them nowhere so both went for their shots.
Iyer hit four fours in his 46-ball knock while Ashwin struck four boundaries and a six in his 62-ball innings.
Ashwin was adjudged man of the match for his unbeaten 42 and six-wicket match haul, while Cheteshwar Pujara was named player of the series for his 222-run tally.
