Shakib backs Bangladesh to come out all guns blazing against SA

Bangladesh T20I captain Shakib al Hasan has pressed on the importance of giving free license to his players amid their journey in the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup in Australia.

Shakib's statement on the free license came on the back of a query if his batters are concerned of the South Africa spin attack comprising left-arm chinaman Tabraiz Shamsi and left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj.

Following a winning start to the competition, Bangladesh will now take on South Africa in the second game Thursday at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground.

“There has not been any discussion on their [South Africa] spinners to be honest. We had all our discussions during our preparation [for the T20 World Cup]. I do not think a discussion now will help much. A discussion now will be like preparing for a class test overnight. I think we have prepared well. Now it is time for us to revise the homework and get down to the field of play,” Shakib told the media in the pre-match conference at SCG Wednesday.

“The game plan depends on the individual. Everyone has been given the freedom. If anyone feels like to hit a four or a six off the first ball – he can go for it. If a bowler feels like bowling a bouncer or a yorker on the first delivery, they can do it. Everyone has the freedom,” the left-arm all-rounder added.

Given the quick nature of T20 cricket, Shakib believes there cannot be many performers but a hero on a given day.

With the big game against the Proteas, Shakib hoped there will be a hero in the XI to bring the game home for Bangladesh and that too at an iconic venue like SCG where they are playing a match for the first time.

“It is important in T20 to get hold of the momentum. You have many performers in Test or ODI but it cannot be in T20. There will be only a few performers but with big impact. We believe it is another opportunity for us. One player from the XI will have the chance to emerge as the hero,” said Shakib.

“These things are important for the team. The openers have the chance to bat 20 overs and I do not see a reason for them to not be able to do that. The bowlers in the first game took 10 wickets so they can do it again. We will have this mindset. We want to go into the game with our minds open, enjoy the game and be aggressive on the field.”
