Five talking points before first Bangladesh-SL Test

The Bengal Tigers and Lankan Lions will lock horns in the first match of a crucial two-Test series - part of the World Test Championship - at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium Sunday. There are plenty at stake for both the teams in the longest format of the game. Here are five talking points ahead of the first Test:

Shakib boost for Tigers

Shakib al Hasan’s availability for the first game came as a relief for the Bangladesh camp as the star all-rounder was initially ruled out due to Covid-19. There was plenty of doubt regarding his match fitness. But a fruitful practice session at ZACS yesterday and later skipper Mominul Haque’s confirmation brought relief to the selectors as Shakib is an integral part for Bangladesh in both bowling and batting. The all-rounder will be eager to perform well as he missed the last two series due to personal reasons.

Flat wicket expected at ZACS

Usually wickets at ZACS offer plenty of runs for the batsmen and the wicket for the first Test will likely be a solid good batting track. Captain winning the toss will definitely try to bat first on a flat deck. The fourth innings batting will be much more difficult so a big score in the first innings will be the target for both teams.

Absence of Miraz, Taskin

Mominul said they will miss Mehedi Hasan Miraz and Taskin Ahmed as both of them got ruled out due to injury. Taskin was in great shape in the last few months and leading the pace attack while Miraz was crucial with both his off-spin and lower-order batting. But the captain is searching for some positive notes as well as their absence might open the door for other players who now have a chance to raise their hands in the Test set up.

World Test Championship points up for grabs

Bangladesh have played six matches in the current WTC while Sri Lanka contested four. Bangladesh opened their account with their famous win against current holders New Zealand at their own backyard in January. Bangladesh have 12 points in WTC table with 16.67% while Sri Lanka (24 points) are in a better position with two wins and as many draws. Both the teams have a good chance to gather some points from this two-match series and these points could prove crucial in the end.

Weather can play a part

Weather can play a significant role in the first Test as there are forecasts of passing showers in the coming days in Chittagong. Team selection could be tricky for both the teams considering the rain but both the captains will wait until final hours. The condition is also hot and humid in the port city and this kind of weather will test players from both sides with regards to fitness and temperament.
