Ace all-rounder Shakib al Hasan is likely to play the Super League phase of the ongoing Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier Division League for Legends of Rupganj.
Earlier, Shakib was signed by Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited for the season.
Mohammedan had earlier released Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehedi Hasan Miraz to play for Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Ltd in the Super League.
The Motijheel-based club failed to qualify for the Super Six round of the tournament.
Shakib thus decided to play some matches for Rupganj in the business end of the tournament in order to get some match time ahead of the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka at home in May.
He is scheduled to return to Dhaka Wednesday and if permitted by the Bangladesh Cricket Board and Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis, will take the field for Rupganj in at least three games.
Mohammedan director AGM Sabbir informed the matter to the media Tuesday.
“The decision was taken on mutual understating. Shakib communicated with us and informed that Rupganj have given him an offer to play as Mohammedan could not qualify for the Super League. We understand the importance of Shakib getting some match time [ahead of Sri Lanka series]. He has requested for an No Objection Certificate from us and we have already issued him that,” said Sabbir.
Sabbir believes BCB has no reason not to allow Shakib play for Rupganj.
Mohammedan last won the Dhaka Premier League title in 2009-2010 season.
This season the club had created a stir in the community signing big name cricketers in shape of Shakib, Mahmudullah, Mushfiq, Taskin Ahmed and Miraz.
However, the club missed out on most of the cricketers as they were engaged in their national team tour of South Africa.
Mohammedan were able to secure just five wins in 10 games and avoided playing the relegation league.
