Abahani, Rupganj Tigers win on Pohela Boishakh

Abahani Limited and Rupganj Tigers Cricket Club were victorious on the Bengali New Year in the Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League at different venues Thursday.

Third placed Abahani beat fourth placed Prime Bank Cricket Club by 28 runs in Mirpur, while fifth placed Rupganj Tigers defeated sixth placed Gazi Group Cricketers by four wickets in Savar.

Abahani v Prime Bank

Player of the match Mohammad Mithun scored a valiant century for the bankers but his side still suffered a defeat at the hands of the Sky Blues.

Chasing 272, Prime Bank were all out for 243 with 11 balls to spare, despite Mithun's fine 95-ball 103, featuring eight fours and five sixes.

The next best score of 39 was made by opener Shahadat Hossain as fall of regular wickets rendered Mithun's century insignificant.

Saifuddin, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, captain Mosaddek Hossain and Tanvir Islam all bagged two wickets apiece for the Dhanmondi based outfit.

Abahani earlier posted 271 losing seven wickets in 50 overs after being asked to bat first, thanks to a joint effort by the batters.

As many as half a dozen batters reached at least 30 with Indian recruit Hanuma Vihari top-scoring with 58 and Mosaddek making the second highest 40.

Prime Bank's Mahedi Hasan picked up three wickets.

Gazi v Rupganj Tigers

Gazi registered a modest 205/7 after batting first with opener Mehedi Maruf scoring the highest 56, but taking as many as 112 balls to gather his runs, owing to fall of regular wickets at the other end.

Gazi's top-order suffered a collapse and were it not for skipper and wicketkeeper-batsman Akbar Ali (48) and Indian cricketer Gurinder Singh (49), they would have folded below 200.

Man of the match Nasum Ahmed, Mukidul Islam and Enamul Haque Jr took two wickets each for Rupganj Tigers.

In reply, Rupganj Tigers reached their destination in 47.4 overs, thanks largely to the 90-run third wicket stand between Asif Ahmed Ratul (49) and Fazle Mahmud (74).

Jaynul Islam and Al Amin bagged two wickets each for Gazi.
