Taskin breathes fire to decimate Proteas

Bangladesh speedster Taskin Ahmed breathed fire to restrict hosts South Africa to their lowest total in the format when the two sides met in the third and series deciding game at SuperSport Park, Centurion Wednesday.

Right-arm pacer Taskin with a five-for in the game touched the milestone for the second time and after a gap of eight years.

Taskin had bagged a five-for in his debut game against India at home in 2014.

Taskin’s record bowling performance complemented by contributions from other bowlers and a fine fielding effort enabled Bangladesh to restrict the Proteas to a paltry 154 in 37 overs.

South Africa after choosing to bat first had got off to a good start.

In-form opener Janneman Malan and Quinton de Kock scored quick runs before the latter perished to off-spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz on 12 off nine in the seventh over.

The Proteas reached 50 runs in 7.5 overs only to find themselves cornered in the overs to come.

Taskin was at the center of it all as the Bangladesh bowling unit picked up wickets at regular intervals and make the hosts struggle to put partnerships together.

Taskin, since the game returned to the field following Covid-19 pandemic break, has been Bangladesh’s lethal most member in the bowling attack across all formats.

During the six-month lockdown, Taskin worked on his fitness and that has been giving the dividends since.

Taskin on the day found his first prey in Kyle Verreynne [nine] from an inside edge bowled in the 13th over and in his next over he removed Malan on 39.

In his second spell, Taskin found three more wickets – Dwaine Pretorius [20] in 25th over followed by the double blow of David Miller [16] and Kagiso Rabada [four] in the 29th over.

Keshav Maharaj pushed South Africa total to 154, but an avoidable run out, in keeping with the hosts' batting performance, brought the innings to an end.

Veteran Mashrafe bin Mortaza bagged a five wicket haul in Nairobi in 2006, which is still the best figure for the country.

Ziaur Rahman, Abu Jayed and Mustafizur Rahman are the other pacers to have recorded five-wicket hauls outside Bangladesh.

Left-arm pacer Mustafizur reached the momentous occasion twice against India and Pakistan in the 2019 World Cup.

Bangladesh raced to their target later.

Opener Tamim Iqbal scored a fine unbeaten 82-ball 87 while all-rounder Shakib al Hasan was not out on 18 as the Tigers registered a historic series win.
