Comilla clinch BPL trophy winning thrilling final

A last over nail biter saw Comilla Victorians clinch their third Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 title defeating Fortune Barishal by one run in the grand finale of the eighth edition at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur Friday.

Defending a moderate 152, Comilla controlled and turned the table in the last three overs of the game.

Barishal had cruised towards the shore with a moderate effort and needed 18 runs off the last 18 balls of the chase.

Off-spinner Sunil Narine bowled the 18th over and gave away just two runs and removed compatriot Dwayne Bravo to ignite hopes for Comilla.

In the next over, left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman dismissed Nazmul Hossain Shanto and conceded just six runs.

In the final over defending 10 runs for the title, Shahidul Islam wrote glory.

With Towhid Hridoy and Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the middle for Barishal, right-arm pacer Shahidul leaked just singles and doubles.

There was a catch drop and also a wide in the over but that did not make a dent to the effort as he gave eight runs in the over to ensure Comilla had the last laugh.

The majority of the limited number of spectators allowed into the stadium were in support of Comilla.

There was jubilation in the stands to which the members of the champion team joined with captain Imrul Kayes taking off his shirt right in the middle of the field.

Barishal in the chase saw Saykat Ali score the most - a quick 58 off 34 deliveries - involving 11 boundaries and one over boundary, with opener Chris Gayle making a 31-ball 33.

With the ball left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam and Narine picked up two wickets each.

Earlier, Comilla all-rounder Narine started from where he had left off in the second qualifier against Chattogram Challengers.

Promoted to open the innings, Narine had struck a record fastest half-century in the previous game and he delivered in a similar fashion in the final.

The left-handed batter got Comilla off to a blistering start after deciding to bat first, scoring a 21-ball fifty.

There was hiccup when he lost his opening partner Liton Das on four but that did not stop Narine from what he does best.

The West Indies cricketer scored a fascinating 23-ball 57 to give a flying start before left-arm pacer Mehedi Hasan Rana removed him in the sixth over.

From there on Barishal turned the table and cornered Comilla innings dismissing four more batters in the next five overs to reduce them to 95/6 in the 11th over.

Shakib, Bravo and Mujeeb had all ensured contributing to the momentum amid which Comilla overseas all-rounder Moeen Ali worked on recovery with Abu Haider Rony on the other end of the crease.

The duo pulled up a 53-run stand for the seventh wicket to help Comilla post 151 on the board for the loss of nine wickets in 20 overs.

Moeen before perishing to a run out added 38 off 32 to the tally.

Barishal bowlers Mujeeb and Shafiqul bagged two wickets apiece.
