Bangladesh Cricket Board’s proposed grading system and auction for the Dhaka Premier League has not been welcomed by the players, as they faced many obstacles in a similar system for the Bangladesh Premier League.
In a bid to hold the league as soon as possible, BCB president Nazmul Hasan sat with the concerned club officials on Monday to sort out the complications a few clubs are facing and solve the problems related to players’ payment. The new system was proposed during the meet and it was learnt the officials were satisfied with it.
However, the cricketers are reluctant to adopt such a system as the existing BPL has caused them to have doubts about it. “As per our Bangladesh Premier League experience, auction is a failed process for the recruitment of players,” national team batsman Shahriar Nafees told Dhaka Tribune yesterday.
“It gives a feel that the players are getting a huge amount of money, but the truth is we are still struggling to collect our salaries from the franchisees. I am afraid of being deprived again if the DPL also follows the same paying method,” he added.
Shahriar thinks this system might adversely affect the players’ earnings, and said they will be the biggest sufferer “since this league is the biggest source of income for most of us.” “The currently established system has been there for the last 30 to 35 years and the stakeholders are happy with it,” he said.
Discarded national left-arm spinner Sohrawardi Shuvo is also against the system because it does not allow players to receive a large portion of their contracted amount in advance. “I have no idea what the payment system will be, as we are yet to receive any official notification, but we usually get a good amount of money before the start of the season, which helps us a lot,’’ said Sohrawardi. “The officials should keep that in mind while chalking out the new policy.”
National player Jahurul Islam is confused about the situation and said he is yet to know exactly what is going to happen.
