Mushfiq regrets resignation

Visitors Bangladesh ended their month long tour of Zimbabwe on a victorious note winning the second and the last Twenty20 by 34 runs and to square the series at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo yesterday. The win, might not be big, but it did bring a smile back to the tourist’s dressing room before their departure.

“It feels good to end the tour on a winning note. Luck was not helping us and we are upset with the overall performance in this tour. We expected a much better performance than this and we should have won the one-day series after the way we started. There were things which didn’t favour us and we made some mistakes too,” said the Bangladesh captain to the media yesterday.

The 2-1 defeat in the three-match ODI series against what was perceived to be a weaker opponent was too much of insult for the wicket-keeper batsman. An emotional Mushfiq reacted to the loss poorly and resigned at the end of the ODI series.

The prompt decision by the 26-year old left the Bangladesh Cricket Board, the team and the nation stunned. However Mushfiq has now understood that the decision was not right. The board was the one who honoured him with the post and he should have discussed his decision with them before making the move public.

“I had talked with many from the board and I have informed them of my thoughts and the ball is in their court now. After declaring me decision I realised that it was the board who gave me the post. They gave me responsibility and honoured me. So I should have had talked to them before making the decision. I made a mistake,” said Mushfiq.

Followed by Mushfiqur’s decision, BCB president Nazmul Hasan Papon told the media that the captain complained to him that the team was lacking the ‘team work’. However Mushfiqur denied that was the case yesterday.

“It was not about the team work. The decision I took was totally my personal decision and to be honest I got emotional. This was my fault. A player like me should never step back. I realised that I should be with my team during the bad days as a captain. There is no issue with the team work. It was just that I couldn’t tolerate the fact that we lost against them (Zimbabwe). The whole team was responsible for the defeats and the team game on the field was not right, we discussed it in the meeting,” said Mushfiq.
