Tamim breaks 131-year old record

Tamim Iqbal broke a 131-year old unofficial record when Bangladesh went to bat on the final day of the drawn Test against hosts Sri Lanka at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

The left-handed batsman reached his half-century in the innings when the team total was 52. There is no official category for such feat but the Bangladeshi broke the record that stood for 131 years.

Australian opener John Lyons had scored a half-century with the team total on 55 in the first Test of the Ashes Series against England in year 1890.

Lyons record was equaled when West Indies opener Chris Gayle reached his half-century when the team total was 55, against New Zealand in Port of Spain in 2014.

Tamim in the game against Sri Lanka was in glorious touch scoring a 101-ball 90 in the first innings and 74 off 98 involving 10 boundaries and three over boundaries in the second innings.
