Vettori will work with HPU spinners

Bangladesh cricket team’s spin bowling consultant Daniel Vettori will work with Bangladesh Cricket Board High Performance Unit spinners during the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.

HPU will travel to the island alongside the national team in September-November this year.

Vettori’s involvement with HPU spinners has come as the BCB changed the initial contract with the former New Zealand cricketer.

As reported earlier this year, the board had the intention to bring changes to the contract with Vettori so that he can work with larger group of spinners.

HPU chairman Naimur Rahman informed the media Friday of Vettori’s involvement with HPU spinners during the tour of Sri Lanka.

“It is mentioned in the contract that he [Vettori] will have to work with spinners who are outside the national team too. During the camp, he will be looking after our [HPU] spinners in the training session, but when the national team begin their Test series [against Sri Lanka], it won't be possible for him to guide them because at that point the HPU squad will be separated from the national team,” said Naimur to a cricket website.

“Probably, there will be seven to eight spinners involved with the national team and the HPU, and the coaching staff can plan how to work with them during that time frame,” BCB director Naimur added.

Bangladesh cricketers are preparing to return to the field as an unit for the first time since March.

Cricket has remained suspended in the country since mid-March due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The players however, started individual practice under special arrangement of BCB amid the Covid-19 situation last month.

Bangladesh cricketers are likely to have a week-long camp in Dhaka before the squad leave for Sri Lanka by September end for the three-match Test series, scheduled to start on October 24.

BCB is mulling to send the HPU alongside the national team to play a number of four-day and one-day matches.
