In a bid to help the people in need during the coronavirus pandemic, a 1989 jersey of Monem Munna, the legendary late Bangladesh footballer, has been put up for auction until Saturday night at 10:30pm through “Auction 4 Action” on its facebook page.
A4A claimed to be a charity, non-profit organization that supports causes for raising funds through charity auction and one among their recent sports initiatives was selling cricketer Shakib al Hasan’s favorite bat for Tk20 lakhs to raise Covid-19 funds.
Earlier on April 23 this year, Shurovi Monem, wife of Munna, decided to put up on auction a No 2 jersey of Munna, which she initially thought he wore during Bangladesh’s first international trophy winning campaign in Myanmar in 1995.
Shurovi corrected her initial statement to Dhaka Tribune that the jersey is actually of the grand finale of the 6th President Gold Cup in 1989 in Dhaka where Munna represented Bangladesh Red team, and lifted the trophy.
Bangladesh beat South Korea 5-3 in the shootout in the final after stipulated time ended 1-1.
They also held Iran to a goalless draw in the previous game of the same tournament.

Tagging a base price of Tk2 lakhs, A4A started the bidding on its page Wednesday, stating, “The Family of legendary late footballer Monem Munna has come forward in the country's time of need by auctioning his winning ‘No 2’ jersey, which he wore in the final of the President Gold Cup against South Korea. A jersey every Bangladeshi would wear or hold with pride!”
National cricketers Soumya Sarkar and Taskin Ahmed had also put up their favorite bat and ball for auction, and sold for Tk 4.5 and 4 lakhs respectively.
Munna is considered one of the greatest footballers the country has ever produced.
The charismatic defender represented the national team with a lot of pride for 10 years, starting from 1987.
Bangladesh won their first international trophy abroad in 1995 under his guidance.
He spent majority of his career at the country’s most successful club, Abahani Limited where he won the league title both as captain and manager before passing away in 2005.
