U19s to leave for South Africa ahead of WC

Bangladesh U-19 cricket team will leave here for Johannesburg Friday night for the U-19 World Cup, scheduled to be held in South Africa from January 17 to February 9.

The junior Tigers have been grouped in Pool C alongside Pakistan, Zimbabwe and Scotland and will begin their campaign on January 18 against the Zimbabweans.

The youngsters in red and green will then take on Scotland and Pakistan on January 21 and 24 respectively.

All the Group C matches will be held in Potchefstroom.

Bangladesh, who have never won the U-19 World Cup in the previous 12 editions, have enjoyed some good run of results in recent times but captain Akbar Ali said they will take each game as it comes and are not targetting the title just yet.

“We have prepared well. Our form is also good. Hence, the supporters’ expectations have increased. We are not looking too far ahead. Our ambition is to take each match as it comes. We are not looking too far ahead as it might put pressure on ourselves. The process that we have followed in the last three-four months, we want to maintain it in the World Cup,” said Akbar.

“I enjoy captaincy. I don’t take it as an extra burden. As long as I am in the field, I look to enjoy the role. I enjoy both wicket-keeping and captaincy. I don’t take extra pressure. I enjoy it on and off the field.”
