Bangladesh national cricket team’s first ever captain Amwarul Karim Shamim, popularly known as Shamim Kabir, passed away yesterday at a Dhaka clinic, where he was undergoing a treatment for terminal health condition. He was 74.
Shamim Kabir led Bangladesh side in their historic three-day match at Dhaka against touring Marylebone Cricket Club back in 1976-77. The unofficial Test, which took place in the erstwhile Dhaka Stadium (currently the Bangabandhu National Stadium) from 7-9 January and the young nation made a creditable draw against the elite side that featured prominent first class cricketers.
Kabir, who was by then in the twilight of his playing career, was endowed the captaincy and the tall and lanky opener played two gritty innings of 30 and 25 in that match to help his side hold its esteem.
He played in 15 first class matches between 1961 and 1969 for different teams including East Pakistan, East Zone and Dacca University.
However, one of the pioneers of Bangladesh cricket did not only contribute to the country’s game through playing he also did a commendable job as an organizer to flourish cricket in Bangladesh at its early stage.
The successful administrator of Bangladesh cricket board was the Manager of the National Team in the ICC Trophy tournaments in 1982 and 1986. He was a former BCB Councilor and had also been a member of various BCB Standing Committees. Shamim Kabir received the National Sports Award in 1999 for his service to Bangladesh cricket.
BCB expressed deep condolence at the demise.
“He was a pioneer. Shamim Kabir captained Bangladesh when times were difficult for cricket and the game had very limited resources. It was due to the passion and dedication of people like him that cricket in Bangladesh is where it is today,” said BCB president Nazmul Hassan at a press release.
“On behalf of the Board, I extend heartfelt condolences to the family of Shamim Kabir. We pray for the salvation of his soul,” said Nazmul.
