‘Abahani have good chance of becoming unbeaten champion’

Abahani Limited coach Khaled Mahmud Sujon believes Abahani have the strongest squad in recent times in the Dhaka Premier league and thus, the Sky Blues should win every match this season.

Abahani are currently leading the DPL points table with four successive wins.

Abahani’s next opponent are Prime Bank Cricket Club who have won three among four matches and are sitting second in the points table.

Abahani and Prime Bank will face each other at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah Friday.

The Abahani team practised at the Academy ground in Mirpur Thursday ahead of their DPL tie, and Mahmud is of the opinion that Abahani have the capability of winning every game this season as they have a very balanced side.

“We have a strong and balanced team. Mehedi Hasan Miraz will not play [today], he is on leave. Probably he will be available from next match. But still, we have plenty of players in our squad who are in good rhythm. Our opponent in the next match are also a strong team. Hopefully, we will have a competitive match,” said Mahmud to the media.

“Definately, there is a chance to become unbeaten champion. But cricket is a funny game. Anyone can lose on their bad day. But I beleive we should win every match as we have a very strong side. I dont think I have ever worked with such a strong side in the Dhaka League,” he added.

Despite winning the first four matches, the coach believes there are a few areas Abahani should improve on, particularly big hundreds from the top-order batsmen.

“There have not been enough big innings from top-order. Although Wasim (Jaffar) made 74 and Jahurul (Islam) scored a hundred in the last four games, we need big centuries from the top-order more consistently. If someone can score a big century in the start, then it becomes easy for middle-order. We have three good players, Mosaddek Hossain, Mohammad Mithun and Sabbir Rahman in the middle-order,” said Mahmud.

“There have been some run-getters in the top-order, but not as expected. We have players like Soumya Sarkar, Wasim, Nazmul Hossain Shanto, Jahurul in the top-order. All these players can score big. But still we only have one hundred in four matches. So we are expecting more big innings from our top-order batsmen,” he added.

In the other matches of the day, Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited will face Mohammedan Sporing Club Limited at BKSP 3, Savar while Legends of Rupganj will play Gazi Group Cricketers in Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
