Bangladesh lose way after promising start against South Africa

South Africa scored 54 runs losing two wickets in their second innings after Bangladesh were all out for 320 in 89.1 overs after day three of the first Test match at Senwes Park Saturday. South Africa are 230 ahead with eight wickets in hand as the third day’s play ended 16.1 overs early due to bad light. Hashim Amla was batting on 17 and Temba Bavuma three at stumps. South Africa started their second innings 176 ahead just after tea on day three. Surprisingly, Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim opened their innings with Mehedi Hasan Miraz.However, it was Shafiul Islam who made the first breakthrough in the third ball of the eighth over. Dean Elgar (18) was adjudged leg before wicket and after reviewing the decision, the original verdict was upheld and the result went in favour of Bangladesh. Aiden Markram then got out for 15 off 26 balls after his 97 in the first innings. This time Mustafizur Rahman brought the success for Bangladesh in the last ball of the 11th over. Mustafizur rolled his fingers across the ball outside off and Markram chased for a cover drive only to edge it to Liton Kumar Das, who did the rest.Earlier, Bangladesh were bundled out for 320 in 89.1 overs. Bangladesh resumed the day with Tamim Iqbal (22) and Mominul Haque (28) and a lot depended on these two to carry their side forward. Tamim started confidently in the second ball as he started the day with a brilliant square drive against Kagiso Rabada. Then both Rabada and Morne Morkel created some pressure from both ends in the morning session of day three. Tamim survived two close leg before wicket calls as both the times, the Proteas reviewed and failed to overturn the decision in their favour.Eventually, Tamim got out scoring 39 while chasing a leg-stump delivery of Andile Phehlukwayo. Tamim tried to play a leg glance and connected a thin edge. The ball was flying down the leg side but Quinton de Kock took an outstanding catch diving to his right. Mominul at the other end scored his 12th fifty and remained not out until lunch with No 6 batsman Mahmudullah. But just when Mominul looked promising and comfortable at the middle, the left-hander was the victim of a soft dismissal.

He gifted a catch to forward short-leg against Keshav Maharaj in the 64th over. He scored 77 off 150 balls with a dozen fours. Sabbir’s innings (30) also ended in the same fashion as Mahmudullah.

The Tamim-Mominul stand put together 55 for the fourth wicket, Mominul-Mahmudullah partnership formed 69 for the fifth and Mahmudullah-Sabbir duo added 65 for the sixth. In the end Bangladesh were bundled for 320, just passing the follow on mark. Their last five wickets fell for 28.
