Tamim, Shakib rise to career-best ICC ranking

Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal jumped six places to his career-best position in the latest ICC Test ranking. As per the latest ranking update, the Bangladesh Test vice-captain reached 14th position in the batsmen's list following his match-winning knocks of 71 and 78 against Australia in the just concluded first Test in Mirpur's Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

Riding on Tamim’s heroics with the bat, Bangladesh defeated Australia by 20 runs. Meanwhile, all-rounder Shakib al Hasan rose three positions to a career-best 14th among the Test bowlers after his match-haul of 10 for 153 against the Aussies. Another Bangladesh spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz moved three slots to 30th while left-arm spinner Taijul Islam jumped four places to 32nd after finishing the Australia Test with five and four wickets respectively.

Shakib also consolidated his position at the top of the all-rounders' list with his highest aggregate of 489 points, having also scored 84 and five in his two innings. On the other hand, Australia opener David Warner returned to the top 10 Test batsmen's list after a valiant century against the Tigers. Warner’s partnership of 130 for the third wicket with captain Steve Smith was not enough to stave off defeat but the former had the satisfaction of rising five positions to sixth after scores of eight and 112. As far as the team ranking in concerned, Bangladesh have only improved their rating points and are still No 9 among the Test-playing nations.

The home side, following their emphatic win, will see an addition of 10 rating points, which currently stand at 69. But Australia are set to hit their all-time low in four years as they won't be among the top four teams. The Aussies will go down to No 5 even if the series ends all-square while they will drop down to No 6 in the event of a 2-0 series defeat.
