Many Tigers fans had vented their displeasure after the Bangladesh cricketers and captain Mashrafe bin Mortaza were fined for a slow over-rate against India in their Super 10 clash last Wednesday.
Mashrafe was fined 20 percent of his match fee while the rest of the cricketers copped 10 percent fines.
According to the International Cricket Council’s regulations, a team might not take more than 90 minutes to complete their quota of 20 overs. While the Tigers bowled out their allotted overs in 104 minutes, the home side took a little over 110 minutes to complete their quota.
Several fans raised questions as to why the Tigers were fined and not the Indians, given that the latter took more than six minutes to complete their stipulated overs compared to the opposition.
As far as slow over-rates are concerned, the match referee always takes into consideration the timing of the fall of wickets. While India only lost one wicket in their last three overs, Bangladesh lost four wickets in the same duration.
On top of that, in the event of a close game, the very last over of the second innings is always tolerated and it is a common feature in world cricket.
