BCB chief still hopeful about Australia tour

Bangladesh Cricket Board President Nazmul Hassan yesterday said Cricket Australia had been offered top level security arrangements while Australia tours Bangladesh.

“We have told them that the cricketers will get VVIP security,” he said.

CA’s head of security Sean Carroll, Australian team manager Gavin Dovey and team security manager Frank Dimasi met Bangladesh’s top security authorities on Monday. They will brief Australia’s Test players and CA officials on their return to Melbourne.

A CA spokesperson said there was currently “no change to our position on the matter.”

Nazmul yesterday said: “There is a standard protocol provided to any visiting team but as they have concerns, the highest authority of the country proposed a four-layer security plan.

He added: “Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Dhaka recently, so I do not believe there will be any issue with security.”

Nazmul said the decision to go ahead with the tour depends on the Australian government, not CA.

Australia’s Test team was scheduled to reach Dhaka on Monday, but delayed the tour upon advice from Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade last Friday.

The killing of Italian citizen Cesare Tavella in Dhaka’s Gulshan area on Monday has made matters more uncertain.
